Stages Of Motherhood

Stages Of Motherhood on Cake Central

This is a cake I entered in a local competition. The theme was "A Tribute to Mom" The bottom tier represents preparation for motherhood, while we are pregnant, or in the duck's case, wait for the eggs to hatch. The middle section, which takes up the most space, is the time we spend caring for our children and teaching them to prepare for being an adult. The top of the cake is an empty nest, which represents when our children go out on their own.

I got a 3rd place for it. This was my first time entering a contest, so I was thrilled! The nest was made by pushing fondant through an extruder to make long ropes. I laid them in a bowl to form the nest and let it stiffen up. Next time I'll mix in some gum paste, as it was quite fragile when it dried. Thank you all for your nice comments!

angelcakesmom, I painted the bottom tier grass, the fish & the water. The seaweed is piped on and then airbrushed over to look like it's underwater. The small ducklings are piped on with RI, as are the lilypad flowers and dragonflies. The duck & duckling are molded fondant & I painted on the details/shading. Thank u everyone!
