How did you make these birds is it Marzipan? What is on the other side of the cake is it a flower?

I made the birds with fondant; but in the original cake by -I can't remember her name- they were made with marzipan. The fondant is a bit heavy for this and I had a hard time keeping the heads on. The back side just has a couple of ribbons coming out of the bottom with a little rasberry on top.
