Thanks everyone for your comments! My sister-in-law told me about using a papertowel to get spirals. After I frost the cake with buttercream, I put it in the refrigerator for a few minutes. Next, I just lay the papertowel on top and smooth it into the icing. When you pull it off then you have a nice design.
