Side/ back of Ohio State Buckeye cake

Caryl, I am a former Buckeye and I LOVE your cake! How did you do the block O on top? Was it carved out of a round layer?

Thanks! Made a template from the cake board-cut the cake a little smaller than the board. Carved from a 9" round, on a 10". Was trying to conserve cake for max. servings, but decorating the inside of the O was a bit tight! Started out smoothing th icing, but actually liked the texture of doing the stars.
