In community album: La Quinceanera
Quinceanera Hexagon and round vanilla cake with strawberry filling. I didn't have the hexagon pans at the time. So I had to make a template and cut out the cakes from a baked 16" round. I think the shape came out really nice. This was a last minute cake and I didn't have a cake base large enough to really finish it the way I would have wanted to. I was in Germany at the time, so running out to pick one up, wasn't going to work. Ignore the cluttered background, didn't set up a good photo station either...ugh!

Cake Club: Your fondant looks fairly smooth although I can see a slight pucker toward the bottom at the corners. Depending on the look you are going for, you could try creating a sharper edge where the sides and top meet, but if you were going for a rounded look, you achieved that. I would work on your bow...they can be difficult and I see some on here that are simply amazing...I consider mine to be OK but need to do a tutorial myself. Your bow streamers are way too long and lay oddly on the cake and your loops are an odd shape. Try using some sort of dowel to make them more uniform....even an empty paper towel tube to get them more rounded. I know you said to ignore the cluttered background, but I can't tell what your base is. Is it the plain white cardboard or did you pick it up off that and put it on something else? A large thick round covered in fondant with a ribbon edge would look nice.

Cake Club: Great making an even hexagon without a pan. The fondant looks nice; I like the rounded edges. However, I would try to smooth the join of the bottom trim. I was going to suggest the toilet paper or paper towel tube trick to improve the shape of the loops, and I, too, think it would look a little better with shorter tails. As to Germany, having lived there--I know what you mean! You might invest in one of those try-fold foam core or cardboard boards to eliminate background clutter in your photos. It is a simple matter to just prop it up behind the cake to photograph.

I agree about the length of the ribbon tails. I personally would have preferred to see the ribbon orientated forward rather than up but this is just a personal preference.

Cake club comment: Great job cutting the hexagon! There's been enough said about the bow and I have nothing to add to that. On your lace or frills border, try running a ball tool over the edges before you use the veining tool on it. It'll give you a more pronounced wavy look. Your fondant, stripes and dots are very nicely done.

Thank you all so much! This is an older cake but I value the feed back just the same. The bow was definitely not my best! I really should have stood it up and cut the tails, despite the customer request. I have since learned that I'm the decorator and can tell a customer, that's not going to look right. Also I now know to put something a bit more stable in the loops as suppose to tissue or a cotton ball. I hated seeing the rough inside of the bow. I love the tips on the frills, so basically, treat them like flower petals. Gotcha!
