In community album: Round Wedding Cakes
I entered this in a cake competition. I was inspired by all of the bright, beautiful colors found in Mexican pottery. I couldn't figure out what do do for the bottom tier and then I found this awesome pattern in the Wilton 2013 Yearbook. I cut circles out of fondant and folded them into triangles. The second tier from the bottom is like a pattern found on an embroidered Mexican dress. That layer is royal icing with a fondant gerbera daisy. The next tier is made of modeling chocolate ruffles which remind me of the dresses during Cinco de Mayo. The top tier has hand painted pottery dishes that were made of gum paste and painted with gel paste colors.

Thank you all for your generous comments. abCakes, I used mostly Americolor gel paste and 2 (red and golden yellow) gel paste colors from Wilton. The Wilton golden yellow gel paste is one of my favorite colors. It is the color that I used on the 14" bottom tier. I printed a copy of each plate (there are three different plates that go around the cake) from my computer, traced them on a piece of parchment paper and then transferred them on to each plate and painted them in.

You should have won, beautiful work.

Thanks so much for the comments! The lattice work was fondant that was squeezed out of an extruder, placed in a pattern on a piece of greased wax paper and then carefully placed onto the cake.

This was one of my favorite cakes of the competition! I took a bunch of pictures of it. :) You did a wonderful job. I have a couple of Mexican plates in my home that look just like the one in your top tier. The colors are amazing. Congratulations!
