    no, they are buttercream free-handed on...I piped the red on, and then used cornstarch to smooth them down.

    thanks for all the great comments...the cornstarch method is just a way to smooth out your icing without adding taste, or messing up the appearance. Just tip your finger in cornstarch and lightly press down on the design...any excess residue will dissolve into the icing, and it leaves no after-taste. How I do the nose and eyes on the Elmo face (see my photos).
