If I'm going to be covering a cake in fondant early on I place a book or dish on top of the cake and that helps let the cake 'settle' sort of replicating the weight of the fondant...Then I carve or crumb coat to even it all out. I used to have horrible bulges, and this helped! Learned the tip from Jessicakes! :)
