Lorax cake for boy

This is a mmf fondant covered cake, with buttercream grass on top and bottom border. All the figures are gumpaste/Fondant mix except the candles of course.

Traffula trees are meringues. Baked meringues for the first time for this. So, I don't think those came out perfect.

From the Cake Club! This is very well executed! Your figures are great! Yes, the meringues could have come out a bit sharper but still great execution. Only real critique I see is the slight ripple on the right bottom in the fondant. Maybe it was rolled too thick and the weight is pushing down? Maybe try rolling thinner. Great cake!

Thanks. Yes Fondant gave a lot of troubles that day. I tried the wrapping method to lay the fondant, wasn't easy.

    I agree w/FromScratch.

Fondant needs some help but the cake is appealing and helps draw your eye away from this.

Cake Club! Cute. Nice characters. Looks clean, except for that little ripple. Good job.

Cake Club: Nobody but a caker would notice the ripple of fondant. The figures are wonderful and I thought the meringue truffulas were supposed to look like that! With all that work, it should have had a finished, fondant covered cake board and should not have been photographed on a turntable. I put a small, low bowl under the cake for some of my photos. It gives it elevation, but you can't see the bowl.

Cake Club: Agree with everything above! Another thing that would greatly help is not using aluminum foil for your presentation boards. It never ever looks nice. Just a pet peeve of mine.

Cake club - I love how bright this cake is and also the figures. I think a finished cake board would be the only thing I would change.

Here from the Cake Club. I agree with the comments above, I love the design of the cake and only flaws I picked up were the traffula trees which could have been done a bit better and I can see the rippling of the fondant on both the right and left sides. Were the layers perhaps bulging under the fondant? It sorta looks like that may have been happening.
I also agree with the other comments about using a finished cake board - not that I've ever had a chance to do one myself lol! I don't really like the look of using aluminium covered diy boards, they always look unfinished and unprofessional to me. HTH

Cake Club.. Love the cake. Great job, by the looks of the cake, the word "VIAN" looks as if it had been painted after you applied it to the cake. Not sure if you intended to or not, but I would have painted the sides of the letters as well, giving it a more finished look.
    Janani65 3/25/13 at 9:34am
Auntginn: No it is not painted. the letters were cut in orange and white fondant to give a 3D look

From the Cake Club :) I think your figurines are wonderful! Really, so cute. The trees look great. I had not thought to use meringue when I made mine. If you make a cake like this again, consider using those striped paper straws for the tree trunks. I love the lettering, too. I did notice the bulge in the fondant at the border but that happens sometimes. I agree with the commenter above who mentioned the foil-covered board. Next time, use a fondant covered cake drum to give your cake the finished display it deserves. Fantastic cake!
