I made this grooms cake for a friend's son. He just finished training for the Marines. It was the first time I have ever covered a cake board. It didn't look as good as I had hoped but my friend was pleased with it.
I took the emblem and a button from his uniform, pressed them into some gum paste then let it dry for a couple of days. I sprinkled it with some corn starch then pressed fondant into the gum paste mold. I used a toothpick to help lift it out of the mold and then I painted them with gold luster dust. They didn't look very good when it was just fondant but I really liked how the gold luster dust made them look. I know you can but a kit to make silicon molds but I didn't want to pay that much for something I was only going to use one time.
