Bookworm Cake

Bookworm Cake on Cake Central

My step-son doesn't like fondant, so this is a book cake make with buttercream frosting and fondant accents. It was very warm that afternoon so I had to prop up the worms head with a toothpick. It was my first attempt at "sculpting" with fondant so maybe I somehow made it too heavy? Any suggestions? Also, I would be greatful for some suggestions on getting a smooth icing finish with buttercream. I'm still VERY new to cake decorating.

You could have tried inserting a dowel into the head of the worm and then inserting that into the cake so you can't see what is supporting it. Often these things have some support but you just don't see it. The cake is cute though.

I used toothpicks underneath him but I don't think they were strong enough. Thanks for the tip!! I'll try a dowel next time I have the courage to any sculpting.
