Finally I have something to show for myself. My Despicable Me cake for my 4 year old son Liam. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed making this one and getting to spend some time on my modelling and building confidence. Love how kids cakes allow you to go crazy with colour and characters. I just really wanted this cake to be FUN as I loved the movie so much. Its my sons fave chocolate cake with milk chocolate ganache and he totally loved it so I'm a happy mum this morning.

Ohhhh, I love, love, love it!!! I love the movie too!!! Jazzstar, congratulations you're an artist!!! you did an amazing job. Are the characters gumpaste? what size are the tiers?
    jazzstar 12/3/12 at 10:30pm
Thanks heaps Rosie2! I am so delighted you like it. The characters are gumpaste for the bodies and I find it easier to work with fondant for the clothing and hair. The tier sizes are 10" and 6"

Thank you Jazzstar for answering my questions, you rock!! ---one last question, what kind of fondant do you use? any tips on getting such smooth and perfect gumpaste/fondant like yours?? mine gets dry pretty quick and cracks :(

This is awesome!!! The characters are so realistic - like they could just come to cartoon life! This cake is oozing with personality - you are truly talented. Very nice job!!!

All I can say is wow! Thank you guys so much, your comments are brilliant. Rosie2 I use Bakels Pettinice which is really fabulous. I also make up my own gumpaste/sugarpaste (I know everyone calls it something different) which I know as "Frans modelling paste" (well the recipe I know as that). It has cream of tartar, tylose and egg white added to the fondant. I also make sure I add a tiny bit of water not long before I use it as I think I'm fairly slow at modelling and I want to make sure there are no cracks. Lyndsayscott the best advice I can give you is the build in stages and make sure everything has dried 100% before you start on the next part. I had 4 heads drying at one stage and 4 pairs of shoes lol. Gru's body (as its so big and pure gumpaste) I made and then left to dry inside a big round tupperware container we keep our cereal in. I left it there for about 6 days and just worked on other bits while I waited. Oh and I find pure fondant (with no tylose) really good for the clothing as it seems to take me longer and when I use sugarpaste it cracks. I hope this helps? Sianpa22 I actually am not sure how long it took in total. I left myself just under 3 weeks from start to finish but saying that I have 2 littlies at home with me so only worked on it in the evenings before bed. I was doing little bits and pieces most nights to get it finished. I did take my time though as I'm new to modelling and wanted to learn while I went. Thank you all again x

Amazing work on the characters you are such an inspiration! Beautiful work bet you had one happy 4 year old :)

Rosie2 and lyndsayscott I was really struggling with standing figurines and couldn't get my build right on them (I made a surfer cake and had to carve away his cankles!) then I found John Cresswell's page Crezart on facebook and his modelling techniques made a huge difference to me. I realised that there were basic rules to modelling that I'd missed
