I love royal icing because it's cheap and hardens like candy so people can keep the design for as long as they desire. (within reason of course) It also allows me to put in lots of detail with a finished look without all the extra sweetness.

Thanks for looking

    Hey Leaveye,
How did you frost this cake? Did you use fondant to shape Dora? My daughter turns 2 in july and she LOVES Dora and I would love to make this for her.
    Thanks

so sorry for the late response. This site is very confusing to get around in anymore. I drew her out and the butterfly and the name. I taped the image I created to the card table I work off of and then take plastic wrap and tape that very tight over the image. These are royal icing transfers. You can use any pre-drawn image but I draw mine out to keep working on my art skills. Some use color flow for this but I like the royal icing better because it hardens faster depending on where your live. Always work darker to lighter. I usually use a number 3 tip to do the outlines. I then go over the outline again and let it dry for about 15 minutes. I then get my colors ready for the picture fill in and I add literally two or three drops of water to the royal icing (one at a time) until the mixture is glossy and I take a tooth pic and stick it in and pull up. You want the consistancy not too watery otherwise it takes too long to dry unless you do it a week prior. When you do the tooth pic trick, what you pull up should slowly go all the way back into the mixture with no trace. When you fill in your design use a smaller tip depending on the area. 1 for really small areas two for medium areas and you can use a three but it will start to drip out pretty quick so you have to be cautious not to ruin your work. Once I'm done filling in I leave it alone for a day. These things are pretty fragile but if you pic it up gently in your hand and turn it over, take the plastic wrap off but be patient. Let the wrap come off by itself. I then make sure the item is secured on a cake board and take any color (after completely dry) and smooth a layer carefully over the back. This strengthens it so it doesn't break when you are putting it on the cake. I place sugar cubes underneath and secure those with royal icing. This way, the client can take it off the cake and save it if they like or sometimes the kids just eat them. Hope this helps. Good luck.
