I first covered the cake with buttercream and then sprinkled the sugar over the icing. It really did look like real sand. Thanks for your nice comment!

Brownulated sugar can be found in any supermarket and its texture is different than granulated sugar. It looks like tiny pellets. I hope that helps!

I appreciate all of your comments! It means so much to me since this is the 2nd cake I ever made. Thanks!

2nd cake! 8O 8O Wow! This is incredible. How did you do the chocolate on top of the cones? Really terrific!

on

For the chocolate....I just melted chocolate and drizzled onto wax paper. When that dried, I anchored the chocolate "coral" onto the top of the cones with some more melted chocolate. I think that I should have used white chocolate since I think it would have looked better. Thanks!

For the cone shapes, I just used sugar ice-cream cones, frosted with icing and then rolled them in the brown sugar. Very easy!

This is SO cute!! I have a question though-are cakes like these hard to eat because they are "gritty" from the sugar? I'm sure the kids don't mind-I just wondered for the adults. I would LOVE to make one like this for my son's bday.

Actually, the adults said it tasted great. I didn't get any complaints and this cake generated 3 more cake orders for me.
