I made this Finding Nemo cake for my son's 2nd Birthday. He is a HUGE fan of the film, he has a duvet cover withit on aswell, so this just seemed the obvious choice for his birthday cake.
I don't buy shaped cake pans, I do a lot of my cakes by carving them. I used 2 5" cake tins for the tail end of nemo and a 5/6" pudding basin for his head. Wait until the cake is completely cool and then put into the freezer for about 20 minutes, keep an eye on it though you don't want it to freeze all the way through. All you want to do is make the cake hard enough around the edges so that the cake doesn't crumble when you carve it. I used sugarpaste to cover him.
For the fins I used petal paste. Using a craft knife I cut out the shape I wanted the fins to be and then left them to dry overnight. Rather than laying the fins flat, I lay the fins over my rolling pin to dry so I got a wavy effect on the fins. Once they were dry I painted them with food colouring.
