Instead of a cake, we brought a 10" cake board and used royal icing to decorate it. Again, instructor completely dictated this design (I'd rather use some of my own creativity), but I guess it's cute. Basketweave is tough with royal icing! :-)
I never thought to use a cake board, that would be great for practice instead of a dummy cake. I don't have anyone to eat the cake if I made a real one. Great job.
I would have preferred a cake, but the instructor said that this way we'd have an example of our work to show people. I would also bet that it's just easier to decorate on top of a board than to do this on the side of a cake, and we were very rushed for time as it was.
