Thanks for all the kind remarks! Rosie2, I used royal icing for all of these. I covered the notebook all in white royal icing except for a small strip that I made black for the book spine. Then I outlined the label with black icing and proceeded to make random lines and circles till most of the white was covered. Very easy and anything goes!
The chalkboard effect was done by mixing a little bit of vodka with white food coloring and applying it with a dry brush. I went over the ABC 2-3 times because it's such a light wash.
