So, I was making an anniversary cake for my parents. I wanted to do a rose cake and it didn't turn out very well. The red velvet was very crumbly (again my first time making red velvet) so I ended up having crumbs in my icing. It was late at night and I was on the verge of disaster. This is what I came up with in a panic!

Rose cake gone wrong!

It was a great attept. Always the thougt that counts. Im sure your parents loved it. I would have continued the roses along the sides to cover up the entire cake. Late nights can sometimes work against us! It is still a cake to be proud of!!!

Thanks.....my parents were quite happy with it even though I was disappointed with my attempt. I did try to go along the sides but it just didn't look nice; I'm not sure if it was my icing consistency or my technique. I appreciate the feedback :)

Two tips that I have learned from having similar problems: 1) always crumb coat, especially for things like chocolate and red velvet!, and 2) start the roses in the center and work out, rather than from the outside in. It is so much easier and looks cleaner.

Plan B looks just fine...good recovery! I too use a crumb coat on darker cakes.
