I made this cake using an 8" round, a 6" round and a 6" square Madeira cake. I cut and shaped them together. Covering in sugar paste, I made a 'wood grain' effect by adding some darker brown to pale brown paste and not blending in completely.
After I had piped the strings, the fun started! When I moved the cake on to a table, the strings broke into little pieces as the two boards I had joined together were not quite level.
I had to redo the strings which was a bit of a pain. I used a large storage box to transport the cake and luckily it reached the party without any strings breaking!
