These are for a rustic wedding, to be set in bowls on the tables. The stones are made from cake trimmings and the tops of my square mini cakes made in the Wilton heavy duty bar pan. The big stones are around 1 x 2" to 1x 3 , and actually torted and filled with filling. The very small pebbles are only fondant.

These are great!! Are they solid cake inside or more like cake balls?
Sherri2012 7/25/12 at 10:45pm
Cher, Thanks! It's cake balls. I used the white almond sour cream cake recipe and a hazelnut coffee creamer to bind it. :)

Wow! They look so real! Do you have a picture of one cut open? I would love to see it. Fantastic work and great idea!

Fabulous idea, and really well executed! Did you cover them with chocolate or fondant?
Sherri2012 7/26/12 at 1:34pm
FACS, It is white chocolate fondant. I think I *might* try dipping them in a thin coat of chocolate first next time, to make them firmer. I think even with a thin coat of chocolate, I would be able to form the cake into a stone shape well enough. Next time I have trimmings I will try it out. They are firm now, but leave dents when I pick them up. A few of them got ruined because I rolled the fondant too thin, too. But to cover them, I just rolled out a piece about 5 to 8 inches big depending on what I ...

- And thanks everybody for the nice comments! They were fun to make. Just grabbed a few real rocks and tried duplicating them. hehe

But to cover them, I just rolled out a piece about 5 to 8 inches big depending on what size I wanted, then wrapped the cake, puckered all the ends together, then sliced them off and smoothed them out. Used cloves to stamp texture on some, and a bunched up plastic wrapper, too.

They are incredible!! So realistic and well done! (First I thought they were real stones to be used as decorations :) and was thinking 'where is the cake'?...)

Thanks! I went back and edited the description on this so people know the stones ARE the cake.
