In community album: Round Wedding Cakes
I was so honored to create this wedding cake. Mary Beth and Ryan are the sweetest couple. Ryan (Broyles) was ranked one of the best football players of all time. He graduated from OU and just got picked up by the Detroit Lions. They held their wedding and reception here in OK, and I created this 4 tier cake for them. The top and 3rd tier I iced smooth. Then I hand piped buttercream scrollwork and painted it silver. The bottom tiers were iced in buttercream. Then I hand cut and ruffled each rose petal and attached with buttercream. I then placed a "B" monogram out of rhinestones to represent their last name. It was designed based on the cake I had in the winter issue of CakeCentral Magazine.

Buttercream with silver scrollwork and hand cut rose petals.....

Smoothing buttercreme is my kryponite. Your work looks flawless

Thank you Chefnme. I smooth with hot water, and I realized that if I keep the icing pretty stiff, it works really well getting a smooth finish.

How did you get such a clean paint job on your scroll work? It's perfection!
DonnaOK 7/20/12 at 12:36pm
Ksshortcake, thank you. I use a crusting buttercream and after I am done piping, if I am going to paint it, I set it back in the cooler and let it set up. Then I mix my dust a little thicker with clear vanilla. That way it leans more towards the consistency of a paste (not quite that thick). I also made the piping icing gray. If I get any little flicks of dust on the icing, I just take a toothpick and carefully remove the little speck. HTH!
