In community album: Children's Birthday Cakes
Turning 5 is a fun event when your birthday theme is mermaids---particularly Ariel. When told Ariel was a copyrighted figure, she accepted a generic red haired mermaid instead. Mermaid is made of gumpaste with chocolate clay hair. Palm is fondant/tylose. Shells are all fondant; coral is iosmalt poured into crushed ice. Fish net is fondant, cut with a pie crust lattice cutter. Sand is crushed grahamj crackers.
Bottom layer of cake is chocolate torted and filled with peanut butter mousse while top layer is peanut butter cake filled with whipped chocolate ganache. Island is peanut butter cake. (I needed the island with its accompanying cakeboard to help support the top heavy palm tree.) All is covered with dark chocolate ganache topped with marbled MFF.

Your cake turned out great! :D Now that I see the net I finally got which tool you meant. LOL It's all pretty, but I especially like the starfish and the palm tree. :) Great job!

Cake Club: Yes, your palm tree and shells are WONDERFUL!! Mermaid's tail seems a little thick right before the fins and I probably would have put her sitting up at least with her head turned. As it is, it seems like she is swimming toward the back of the cake. But it's beautiful....LOVE IT! I think I would have faded the island in a little more or neatened up those edges, too.

Great job. Maybe could have made the net strands a bit finer.

Cake Club: Jan, you already know how much I love that palm tree. Love all the details that make this cake come together. The tail could be tapered a bit and if you ever get the opportunity to do this again you might consider making the fins larger and sculpted down the island a bit. I haven't actually done this but you can add raw sugar and black sugar (Wilton) to the crushed graham crackers to give the sand some depth. Overall, Love it!

Cake club comment: The palm tree is amazing! So are your shells, I had to reread your description because I thought they were real! I think the mermaid's tail fins could have been wider and the strands of her hair more defined. All in all, fabulous cake!

I love it. This is just me and I am tired so take this with a grain of salt but I thought the mermaid was patting a whale then realized it was a lump of land . Look closely at the lump and you'll see a whales eye (seriously). Love the idea of the net, gotta remember that. Your palm tree is to die for.

LOLLLLL! You know, you are so right! I didn't see that until just now reading your post. I'm not really fond of the island, but needed something further than the depth of the cake to anchor the very heavy palm tree. I didn't like the fact that it pushed the mermaid back to the edge of the cake. (And I can't stand her tail, but I only made one and had no time to make another.) Yup, being thinner toward the flukes would have given her more pizazz.
Thanks all for your comments.
