Here's an example of oil bleeding from buttercream into fabric ribbon. All the ribbon on this cake had been backed with wax paper, which had been cut to size and attached with double-sided tape. Unfortunately, the second-from-the-bottom tier had bleeding nonetheless, because the ribbon made contact with the tier below it. This caused the oil to literally bleed upward from below, rather than from behind where it was actually attached to the cake. Luckily, I was able to fix the problem before the wedding, but I was careful not to allow my ribbons to touch the tier below. Just a head's up!!

This is a pretty cake. I'm glad you were able to fix the ribbon before the wedding. What did you use for the sparkles on the top tier?

Thanks superliciouscakes! For the top tier, I used Wilton's "White Sparkling Sugar" sprinkles, which I bought at Jo-Ann's. I used about half the bottle to cover that 6" square. Hope that helps!

Thank you! I can't wait to try it.

I usually cover the backs of my ribbon with clear shipping tape. Then I trim to size. Never an issue with grease getting into the fabric. This is a very nice cake! Love the sparkles too!

I have always rubbed my ribbon with veg oil prior to putting it on the cake. I make the ribbon a bit darker, I do not have any trouble with bleeding. I do like the packing tape idea. The cake is beautiful!!!!!!!! Love the top layer.

This same thing happened to the first wedding cake I made; I had backed the ribbon with packaging tape as well. That cake is gorgeous, I love that there is a different design on each tier.
