Football Cake

Football Cake on Cake Central

This cake will forever be referred to as the Charlie-Brown football cake, because like CB, football success was frustrating and painful! I had three epic fails before I was able to produce this final product. This cake started out as a 3-D version that was (finally) structurally sound, HOWEVER, I had a filling blow-out that ruined the fondant on the bottom tier and was forced to dissect it and salvage the top tier. After I got it on the cakeboard and smoothed out the bottom cut edge as best I could, I decided to pipe a border to hide a few imperfections. Warmest day so far, was 70 degrees overnight and the buttercream softened and fell away from the football. As Charlie Brown would say, "AAAAAAARRGGHHH!!!" Through all the frustration, I learned so much! 1. No batter add-ins for 3D cakes. 2. Pound cake a MUST for supporting layers. 3. Full-over-the-rim pan of baked cake to avoid blowouts. 4. 3-D horizontal-oriented cylinder shapes are just plain TOUGH, Lucy!
