Show ThreeLittleBlackbirds's Photos in album: Cupcakes!
These cupcakes or mini cakes were created for a sugar art competition in a cupcake confection category. Each tea cup is hand carved, covered in fondant, hand painted with edible color and fixed to a matching saucer also made of sugar and hand-painted. A handle is then put on as well as royal icing piped details and edible gold glaze accents. Each little teacup cake has a unique design to represent a mismatched collection of vintage fine china. There are even sugar tea bags that seem to be suspended in the swirling cup of hot tea, and hand-painted tea labels.
Roses, rose buds, and rose leaves are also made of sugar and hand crafted to look as real and delicate as possible.
These little teacups won First Place in the CO ICES Sweet Times in the Rockies Sugar Art Show!

Absolutely stuning!!! I really admire your work. I try to save all of your creations whenever I come across them. May I ask What do you use for the paint? I've tried using vodka in my americolor, but your colors are just amazing. :)

So realistic. How long did each 'cup and saucer' set take to complete? Also, how did you mold the saucers?
ThreeLittleBlackbirds 2/14/12 at 4:06pm
The saucers were molded using real tea cup saucers covered with shortening. I let them dry 2 full days on the saucers, then removed them, added a thin round of more fondant w/ tylose to the center bottom of them to raise them up slightly (like real saucers) and let them dry on their own another 24 hrs before painting them. All of the painting on the saucers and teacups was a full days work as well.

It was a well deserved win! These are stunning when I first saw the thumbprint picture I thought "wait where's the cake"! Gorgeous, great job!

Absolutely exquisite. If I had half the talent I'd be very happy. A well deserved win
