Why wafer paper? It's easy to work with, doesn't dry out and is inexpensive. It doesn't really have a taste but if you can use extract instead of water as "glue" to add some flavor. Thanks for looking!
Thanks everyone for the kind thoughts! Wafer paper is sometimes called edible rice paper although the ones I've seen have been made from potato starch. It can be purchased at some boutique cake decorating stores or online at Chef Rubber. It can be airbrushed before or after cutting or assembly. A light hand and drying between coats should achieve just about any color you'd like. It doesn't have much taste but you can add a little interest by using extract or flavored vodka as your "glue" in place of wate...
kdscalling: the punch that is shown in photo #1 - a 1.5" round but you can use any size round punch. Kadeebo: they can be made ages in advance! Their only enemy is moisture so if you keep them away from steam or splashes, they should be fine. I've had mine stored in the airtight ziploc bag they came in for at least 3 years and they are fine. The only thing that might go stale is the oil they are made with but my 3 year olds still taste the same as the day they arrived. Hope this helps!
