I told all my friends that they were only getting a cupcake for christmans - I just didn't tell them what size they were getting. I just had to make this cupcake after seeing the Giants from W Sussex. This big boy is filled with an ornament courtesy of IAmBaker.com (and I wish I could show it to you) in red & green cake ball filling. The pinecone is handmade using chocolate and a mold from Sugar Delights(Jennifer Dontz). Everything is edible on this cake. Love how this turned out and I made 8 of these as gifts.

Just lovely. Is the base of the cupcake chocolate or cake covered in fondant?

SweetcakesCT: The base is made of red melts pour into the mold, cooled and a 2nd coat was applied. If you make this be sure to carve off some of the sides of the cake before icing or it won't fit in the candy mold.

This is so pretty! Do you mind sharing how much of the bag of candy melts you used?
Cookie4 12/17/11 at 4:09am
Armywife1: I used almost the entire bag. There was approximatelly 1/4 C of the melts left.

I'm thinking of doing this as the top tier of my Christmas cake. My only question is, when serving this, how do you cut it? Do you usually take off the top of the cupcake and serve it separately? Also, how do you cut the base of it with the chocolate around the base?

Now, that's a great question. I debated on putting a board between the top and bottom of the cake to mae it easier to cut but because I made the ornament inside using red & green cake ball filling I didnt want to disturb the center. To cut it I am recommending that a knife dipped in boiling water is used to melt the chocolate as you slice. Otherwise, you'll just have to 'dig-in'. In any event, it makes a beautiful presentation and even if you filled it with styrofoam it would look beautiful as a topp...
