I was inspired by cakes made by sealey and labmom and found out how to do the bubbles from Tami Utley's excellent tutorial, although it took me four tries to get the bubbles to come out. I'm a total ditz at icing in buttercream, but my daughter, who this cake was for, doesn't like fondant. It's not great, but it's the best I've ever done - I'll get it eventually. Only the top tier is real cake. It's a WASC made with Bailey's that has Bailey's spooned over the leveled layers and frosted in Bailey's buttercream. Surprisingly enough, after all that, the taste was not overpowering but just right.

Your bubbles came out great! Love the look. I still haven't tried these yet. Sugar Shacks' Perfecting the Art of Buttercream is a great investment for learning how to get smooth buttercream.

Ooh, love the bubbles! I'm looking for an excuse to make some but from what everyone says there's a pretty steep learning curve. Nice job!

After I struggled with this cake and a couple of others, sillywabbitz, I ordered Sugarshack's DVD, but it hasn't come yet.

Viva Paper towels!!! They will save your life for butter cream. Just after the cake crusts, take a fondant smoother and a viva paper towel and rub until smooth...it totally works!

Thanks for your suggestion, CHORTON. I did that (with computerpaper because I can't get Viva here), and it was still a little uneven! I'm pretty sure it's practice - and the consistency of the icing seems to be key, too.

I love, LOVE the look of this cake! How cute are those bubbles? Oh and to help smooth, I suggest the Melvira roller method...small sponge roller will help even stuff out. I use it all the time. Also, the hot knife method works too. GREAT job on this though! :D

Carmijok, thanks for your suggestion, too. I'm looking for one of those as we speak, but they're not too thick on the ground here in Mexico. Next time home, though...

I love the bubbles! Did you paint them after they were dry? I'm going to be trying them tonight just for fun. Do you have any tips that you'd be willing to share? Thanks :)
