In community album: 2011 Awesome! Magical! Sweet! Cake Contest
This is my 2nd attempt at a fondant cake. My son couldn't decide between a rocket cake or a toy story cake, so he ended up picking a "toy story cake with a rocket on top". Buzz layer is dark choc mud cake and the woody layer and rocket are raspberry swirl cake. I made the rocket in a tin can (from a tall tin of pineapple juice... Not sure if that is an Australian thing??) and it turned out well. I had so much fun making this cake, and a HUGE thank you to all the toy story cakes on here...you gave me so much inspiration!!!

I love this cake!! Just curious how you built the wings?

M3luhknee: I just mixed some tylose powder with my fondant (i'm sure gumpaste would work)....i just rolled it out kinda think (like maybe as thick as a pencil), cut the triangles, then put 2 toothpicks into each one. i let it dry for a couple of days, then they were rock hard to just slide the toothpicks into the rocket on the day.

Oh sorry....did you mean the buzz wings??? any way, same deal as above... just added tylose powder to my fondant, rolled it as thick as nearly 2 pencils, put 3 toothpicks down the straight said and let it dry for a few days. Once hard i added the coloured sections and secured with sugar glue. I then let that dry for a couple of days too. The toothpicks allow for the solid wing to slide into the cake and stand up for as long as you need (I put them in the night before, and they didn't fall).

Oh...i did also put a tiny bit of buttercream under the wings for extra support, which set hard in the fridge over night.
