You're right...it is butter cream iced smooth. I like to keep a spray bottle handy with water in it to lightly spritz the cake after I've applied the icing. It makes the spatulla glide over it so smoothly and you can really achieve a near perfect surface with buttercream. I did freehand scrolls by first piping a wavy line going around each cake and then adding the curves and curlicues off of that. I used a tip #5 for the base. The roses were provided by the bride.
