Baby Carriage

Baby Carriage on Cake Central

Two white 12" x 18" cakes, iced in buttercream with basketweaved sides. Hood and wheels covered with buttercream icing which were made out of styrofoam. I glued ribbons on the back of the wheels and tied them to the columns. Baby in the carriage was furnished by the mother-to-be. I covered her with a fondant blanket. I made a bow for the baby's head with ribbon because it was just too plain looking. I added drop flowers to the hood and corners of the carriage in pink/white combinations.

I used a sheet of styrofoam, 2" thick. I cut squares and glued them together. then I took a small saw and hollowed out the inside of the carriage. I used another small piece of styrofoam like a piece of sanding paper and shaped the rest .. it really wasn't too hard to do.. the main thing I had to watch was to not get it too thin and break it :)

this is absolutely beautiful!!! I'm doing a baby shower cake this weekend, but it's real small so this would be way too much cake. Darn!

Thanks nanni :) this cake was a challenge for me as it was very large and trying to work out how to support the weight of it was a challenge by itself lol

I glued 3 pieces of 2" thick styrofoam together and sculpted it from there .. I have a small saw and I kind of cut until I got the shape and where it would fit the width of the cake ... after I had the cake done, I just dropped it down onto the cake .. it fit perfectly :)

this was the mom-to-be's 4 child lol .. she had 3 boys and this was their frist girl .. .they were having a huge, huge baby shower to celebrate :) I made another 12"x18" sheet cake (didn't take a pic of that one) that I divided off in small squares and put roses in each square with stems... 54 little rose buds! *phew* :D

oh I was scared too Meeka!! lol It really all came together but I took my time and thought each step out before I did it .. it all came together really well.. everything went really smooth.. the mother-to-be loved it... her mother had sent a picture of one for me to see.. she told me that the cake I made was so much prettier and looked so much better than the picture she'd sent me.. always makes you feel good when your customer is happy :)

Wow. I'd never seen anything like that before! Must have been a challenge to work with the styrofoam (I learned a couple of years ago that styrofoam, while great to ice and decorate, does not like to have pillars inserted in it! LOL So I imagine cutting it was just lovely! :P

I made one of these about a year ago, but used a cheap plastic bowl from the dollar store and cut about a third of it off and frosted it with butter cream....really easy.....and not as time consuming as the styrofoam....

This cake was very large... 12x18" double stacked with pineapple filling... it'd serve 75 - 85 people and I charged her $2.50 a serving .. I did put icing on the styrofoam; 2 coats of buttercream then smoothed it with a Viva papertowel .. thanks!
