Purple And White Wedding Cake

This was our first wedding cake. It was also our first time making flowers. The bride requested a cherry flavoured cake as the top tier and styro for the 2nd and 3rd tier. The cake was to be draped in deep plum fondant with lots of white flowers. No other instructions were given other than 'do what you think is best'! So, after struggling to teach ourselves how to make gum paste flowers, we decided to give the flower clusters some depth by painting some with pearl glaze, adding deep purple petal dust in the centres and dying the gum paste deep purple...boy are we glad we did. The only real challenge we had was ahering the purple fondant draping to the cake, the drape on the 2nd tier kept cracking so we used shortening to moisten it to avoid further cracking. We learned A LOT with this cake and we look forward to the opportunity to do it again!
