1950 Mercury

This cake was made for the grand opening of an auto museum. The owner just purchased the 1950 "Wasabi" from Barret Jackson and I was asked to make a cake of the car. I used five 1/2 sheet cakes to carve from. It took about 24 hours to make, that might seem a little long but this was my largest 3D cake and my first car! I made the hood a week ahead of time by carving a model out of styrofoam, then laid gum paste over it to dry. There are 2 wires in it to keep it propped up on the car. The engine is a rice krispy treat covered in fondant and the parts are gum paste. It is all air brushed except for the silver trim which I painted by hand. The license plate is an edible image. I did have it on a rotating base, but it exceeded the weight limit! It was about 125 lbs. The flavor was pink Strawberry champagne with chocolate chip. When I delivered it I got to meet the guys who made the Wasabi, the real one. It was an awesome experience!
