I made this cast party cake for my son's middle school production of Charlotte's Web. Chocolate cake, fondant icing, figures & details. Clouds are buttercream, web says "Some Play", my son's idea, and is made of flexible Royal Icing using Wilton gum paste mix (2 cups mix, 1/3 cup hot water, mix until combined, piped using tip #3).

Thank you. I also meant to add that I painted "Some Play" with silver luster dust & Everclear.

What a wonderful cake! I've just been reading up on the flexible RI. Thanks for the link to this pic. I can't wait to try it on my nephew's spiderman cake coming up!!

love this....could you give me a little more details on the flexible royal icing? did you start with the bag of wilton pre made gum paste mix? and add the water to it. I need to make a spiderman cake and thought this would work well. thanks

I used WIlton's powdered gum paste mix, the pre made gum paste would not work for this. There is a ton of info on this technique in these threads: (...) and (...)

The links to the threads didn't work, just search the forums for "Using Wilton gumpaste mix for flexible royal icing " and "great new royal icing idea! " I love this technique, is SO easy to do.

is the flexible RI the same as SugarVeil?
FullHouse 2/14/11 at 12:00pm
No Sugarveil is a different product, and much more expensive. This dries hard and will crack if not handled carefully.
