I am making a cake similar to this one this weekend. What did you use as a support for the tower?

I built the tower around a very long wooden dowel (about a foot). The roof hooked onto the end of the dowel. I put 4 shishkabob skewers into the bottom of the tower to hold the tower upright on the cake. and I didn't move it once it was done. LOL.
