I made the frame out of 1/4" plywood and dowels placed like the king pins so it would support the cake. built the top out of 4 layers (2 layers the complete length 2 layers 1/2 the length) and and shaped the cake to look like a shoe. the wheels are RKT covered in fondant I also added some RKT covered in fondant to look like the truck and cusions and king pin. (parts of the skate). I also covered a the 1/2" board base fwith fondant to look like a wood floor. picture does not show it well.
i would like to make this cake this weekend as I just received a request, but I've never used plywood nor am I crafty enough to know how to support the cake. I can't see pictures of the underside of the skate, are you able to give a few more specific instructions on how you created the base? I love your work!
I drilled holes in the plywood base and GLUED (very important step) the dowels into the base and the plywood shoe base. if you install the dowels in the location of the wheels then they will be hidden from sight. i only used 2 dowels and it was sturdy enough to hold everything.
