In album: glitter
Customer asked for a cake with bright artsy colors. MMF painted with vodka/gel colors, gumpaste numbers with edible glitter. Customer also requested 3 layers of a soft, perishable banana pudding filling that I was a little worried may bulge out because of the weight of the fondant, so I used the method of cutting a top circle of fondant for the cake, then cutting a long strip to roll over the sides and it worked perfectly! The top border covered the small seam where the pieces met and the cake stayed straight and beautiful.

Thank you for the nice comments. The painting ratio depends on how thick you want the paint to be and how dark or bright you want the colors. I just play around with it until I have the ratio I want. And no, it wasn't difficult to paint--I have so much fun with this stuff that I can't believe people pay me to do it

Whoo. Reminds me of the old days! Your assembly method is called "banding" the cake and it is an excellent stabilizer! Well done.

Great cake..Love the colors...So you cut a circle the same size as the cake and then cuts strips?Do you wrap them from top to bottom or horizontally around? Interesting method..Would like to know more!

Thank you all for such sweet comments! I used the cake pan that the cake was baked in and cut a circle of fondant for the top. Then I measured the height of the cake and the circumference and cut a rectangular strip to match that measurement. This was rolled up (like a fruit roll up) and then rolled around the cake. I had let my buttercream crust, so I lightly brushed some water on it for the fondant to stick. The seam at the top is sealed together with a bit of water and then covered with a small border.
