Cowboy Hat

how did you cover the hat? is the brim fondant? I'm working on one now and have cut the top to shape, but I'm still wondering how to ice it....
the brim is 1/2 fondant 1/2 gumpaste i dried it for 2 days over a real hat...then iced the top with wilton white frosting and covered it with fondant...the brim cracked when i set top on it and the curl of the sides flattened out??? so i covered the crack with a tassle!!
