In community album: Independence Day (4th of July)
I wanted to make a cake for Memorial Day that was a little different, so I came up with the hidden flag cake! I'm sure others have done it before me, but I've never had one or seen one. The cake is vanilla cake colored blue and red torted into thin layers. The white stripes are buttercream. I really wasn't spending a lot of time on the outer decoration since the inside was the focus of the cake. Everyone was surprised for sure! Will I make it again? Not likely! It was sooooooooo sweet! If I do make it again, I'll make sure to count my stripes!

This is so cool! How did you do the middle blue part with the stripes beside it?

What a clever idea. Nicely done.

You need to divide the cake into thirds, roughly. I actually weighed it out, which shows the really Type A side of me! You can bake it in three pans, or you can use one tall and one regular pan. Either way, color two thirds red and one third blue and bake. Then torte the red layer(s). Cut the blue to the size you want (a little more than half the radius of the cake is what I used) and cut the same size out of 4 of the torted layers of red. Then switch the layers. The extra is a snack!

you must have an agbay :)
themaytrix 6/9/10 at 8:29pm
Thanks to everyone! No, I don't have an agbay. I actually had to look it up on google, since I've never heard of it! What a great tool! I just used my cheap Wilton cake leveler!

Very creative. The cake itself looks so moist. Would you share the recipe you used?

Wow, how creative. I can see how it'd be too sweet, but just the effect would be worth doing once. I' might have to try it out for the holidays
