This was a copy of my sister's cake I did a few years ago...all fondant accesories....lids are cake boards covered in fondant. I used styrofoam wedges to create the "open" boxes. Place the wedge on the cake, place the lid on the wedge, place the next cake on the lid....drive a dowel straight through all layers to hold in place. This cake had 3 dowels from top to bottom plus each layer had it's own dwels to support the cake above. It was picked up at my shop and driven over 2 hours to Poughkeepsie and they told me it made it there just fine!! phew!
