Thanks everyone. I made the trunk of the trees using fondant with tylose added, rolled a sauage and then pushed a skewer up it to keep it firm and give something stable to attach it to the cake with. THe leaves were just cut with a reglar leaf cutter and the used a knife to create the detail, and allowed them to dry in a formwer. I pushed a small wire into the top and attached the leaves to this with glue. The surf board has a small amount of very thinly rolled fondant hand painted for detail.
