How do you get the icing so smooth so that it looks like one big cake?

I noticed someone already asked the question of how this is iced so that it looks like a cake, but did not see an answer. Could you please tell me?

I use an Icer tip and just ice the top of the cupcakes like you would a regular cake. I find that the Icer tip is faster and controls the amount of icing more than just ploping the icing ontop and then spreading. But I have done it that way too.

This is really good, I'm about to make my first cupcake today and I'm a bit nervous.
