I used the grass tip to do the soft, fuzzy bear look...but when I cut the cake, a lot of the frosting fell off. So, I would recommend frosting the cake first, smoothly, then putting on a layer using the grass tip.

This cake is darling. I agree with you with frosting the cake first. I have had the frosting to fall off if I didn't frost first.
