The witch, toad, ax, book and pumpkins are fondant and gumpaste. The cauldron is chocolate cake with crusted buttercream, the tree trunk is yellow cake with maple buttercream, both were air brushed. The burning coals and bubbling cauldron are cooked sugar poured into homemade molds. There is also pulled sugar at the top of the cauldron. It all sits on a custom base and Xmas lights were used for the lighting of the pumkins, cauldron, coals and witches' eyes.

thank you guys. I know the first (contest) pic kinda sucked, I was in a hurry to load one on time for the deadline. So I went back today and added a few better ones so you could see more detail. This was the hardest cake I've done to date, but definitely worth it. I learned so much through trial and error on this one!

This cake is a masterpiece and should have won FIRST place! I certainly hope this doesn't put you off of entering future contests because I would love to see more of you inspiring work! Many thanks for being so generous and sharing the instructions for creating a similar cake....as if I could ever recreate it? I will certainly have fun trying next Halloween. Congratulations! You were number ONE in my book!

I can't believe you didn't win first. Maybe next time. Yours really was the best! :(
tesso 11/6/09 at 4:27pm
this cake is fabulous. And my absolute favorite. I dont understand why it didnt win first place, besides a perfect halloween theme..you used such a variety of medium to achieve this cake and showed quite a lot of talent and skill . I dont quite understand the judging rules or what they are looking for.. There are a lot of great looking cakes and talented people on here. But this cake really stands out from the crowd. YOU SHOULD BE SO PROUD !!! 8)
