This was a beehive for a Grooms' Cake. The Grooms' family are beekeepers. The Bees are not edible, they were ordered from a beekeeping magazine in order to look very realistic. The cake is a 4 layer marble with buttercream then the first fondant layer. Then I made 'panels' out of the fondant for the sides, in order to make it look more like actual 'boxes'. The top is just a silver cake base, but I thought it worked really well. I 'built' the base out of cake boards covered in white cake foil. It needed to look as realistic as possible, but I wanted it to look 'elegant' since it shared a table with the Bride's cake also.
