Victoria's Birthday Cake

Victoria's Birthday Cake on Cake Central

this si my copycat cake of so many beautiful 'popcorn' cakes on the site! I mase butter cakes, torted w/choc mocha buttercream, covered in fondant...all 'accessories' are fondant too. Had trouble w/covering cake in fondant, so I fluted the 'container'..I always get ripples in my fondant on the sides...any suggestions? Am I rolling too much out? It drives me nuts..

thanks!! I used a toothpick to 'dot' in the letters..it says Victoria 16 since it's her 16th b-day! I was trying to make it look like her name was in lights, but...it still look s ok :)

I think it looks GREAT!! How'd you do the film reel and strip? They're perfect! And I think your lettering idea is awesome too!

you are all so nice :) It's nice to have positive feedback when you work for so many hours on a cake!! I used fondant for the reel, movie film & strip, then painted w/thinned gel colors & luster dust mixed w/vodka. I draped teh 'movie strip' over 2 rolling pins of different sizes for the 'rolling' effect. I cut the reel out of fondant using the top of a pretzel container lid & used 2 sizes of round cutters, along w/a straw for the othr holes...

I 'buttered up' my hand w/shortening & cut up large marshmellows..then i turned the marshmellow pieces inside out, so the sticky side was on the outside-that gave it the 'popcorn' look, I thought. Then I just stuck each piece on top of the cake over the melted marshmellow that I put on top to build from. It gave it some height& something to 'stick' to. After that, I painted some 'kernals' w/diluted yellow gel colors & highlighted w/gold luster dust mixed w/vodka. Hope that helps!

the vodka mixes well w/the luster dust & helps it adhere to the fondant-if you mixed it w/water, it would just run off...that's my experience anyway :)
