The volcanoe was covered in buttercream. Then sugar boiled to a soft stage was slightly cooled and poured over the cake. The sugar continued to boil so it would get candy hard. I poured a variety of shapes onto oiled foil to get the lava shapes. Once set up, I melted them to a ring of the candy I had also made and it sat on top. There was a glass bud vase inserted into the cake and dry ice and water were put in it to make the smoking affect.
