In community album: 2010 Fairies and Dragons Cake Contest
I made this cake for my son's birthday. This came from the precious book ,The Monster Bed, written by Jeanne Willis and adorably illustrated by Susan Varley. The matress and the monster beneath the bed are the actual cake. All small figures are made of fondant. Thanks to these two women for enriching the lives of my children through this book. This was their all time favorite! My son was so delighted with this cake that he guarded it at his birthday party.

What a perfect job you did! I can see why your son loved it! What did you make the head & footboards out of? Did you just not mix the brown coloring all the way to get the wood grain? I'm making a cake that is a board w/a bent nail & i was contemplating diff. ideas to get the most realistic look. :)

Thank you all for the wonderful comments! The headboards are made of foamboard and the plastic columns, bedposts, have slits cut in them to hold the foamboard. There is a masonite board covered in contact paper holding up the cake mattress. slits in columns also hold up the board. I then covered it all in slightly marbled fondant to give the bed a burled wood look. The rest is all cake and fondant.
