Cake is covered in fondant, with a chocolate fondant band and silver dragees in the band. You can see the "stitching" around the edge of the brim. The "wood plank" cake board is actually fondant that was hand sculpted and painted to make it look like wood planks. This helps to showcase the hat.
To make the hat itself, we stacked 4, 13" x 9 7/8" oval cakes, with a board divider in the middle making it 2 tiers. We then just cared the top sides to the shape you see, took some out of the top, and rounded the back slightly.

We used a fondant tool to run around the edge for the look of the stitching. Then we rolled the fondant on the sides using flower formers to get the rounded shape. We added gumpaste into the fondant to help it stiffen too. Thanks for the compliment.

Excellent The realistic look of the hat is very cool. Would've been good t know how big the cake was and how you stacked it., but that's just me in case iI ever want to undertake such a structural nightmare!
