I made this cake for a friend's mom for her birthday using a cool new technique to make gelatin butterflies. Outside the class I haven't done these before. I'm very pleased with the way they turned out. This is actually the back of the cake, but I think it gives a better view. The butterflies are in a "swooping" pattern over the entire cake. I also used some of JenniferMI's quilting techniques on the sides as well as her white chocolate fondant -- awesome!! Thanks Jen!!

Thank you for all the kind comments!! I must say I'm really, really happy about the way this cake turned out. As to how I did the butterflies, it's kind of hard to explain but let me try: I took a class with Michaelle Stidham (awesome cake artist by the way) and she developed some veining sheets. We made a simple gelatin solution and painted it over the veining sheets, trimmed them and used piping gel and disco dust to decorate. Royal icing piped bodies. Hope that helps! :D

CSM: I love the butterflies and the color of them. I'm not to fond of how they are placed on the cake. The quilting is perfect. Finish off the cake board with a matching color ribbon and you you're done!

CSM: Great job! The quilting is perfect and I really love your gelatin butterflies (the colours is lovely too) but I have to agree with cakemommy about the board (I think a white board (maybe fondant covered) with a ribbon to match the butterflies would have just topped it off beautifully. My first thought when I saw this was that perhaps there are too many butterflies but it could be as mentioned and it could be the placement. Overall you did a fantastic job! Excellent butterflies and excellent ...

Beautiful cake. The butterflies are wonderful as is your cake work. Personally, I think the silver cake board goes well with the blue.

CSM: very pretty cake! I love butterflies, and I especially love the color you used for them. For me I think there are just too many of them, or maybe there doesn't seem to be a delicate flow of positioning? overall this is a very beautiful cake!
